The crown jewel of PNRNetworks with over a decade of shows, Subject:CINEMA is more than just about movies; it’s about a state of mind. The motto “Real Movies for Reel People” borrowed from our original blog Popcorn N Roses is the perfect example of what we do. Hosts TC Kirkham and Kim Brown represent the average Joe and Jane Moviegoer. It has always been their goal to bring a unique perspective to the world of film. Whether it’s through their unique perspective on various film topics, going over a revered (or reviled) directors’ or actors’ career, bringing you a list of favorites, reviewing current or classic films, or something else near and dear to their hearts, you can be sure that they bring this to the viewers because they want them to grow as film watchers as they have done.
The long running podcast began in the summer of 2006, and since that time has become known for a number of special features and shows, including their coverage of film festivals around the world (referred to by the hosts as film ‘fethivals’, in homage to an old David Letterman routine), including two of their most downloaded annual shows, the “Fethival Of Film Fethivals” at the beginning of the year (previously done in late January, it moved to mid-February in 2019 to allow more precise coverage) which goes over the crop of films at the BIG January festivals – Sundance, Slamdance, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara – as well as several other festivals occurring at that time of year; and “Boston Springs A Fethival”, in mid-May, which attempts to cover all TEN film festivals happening in a tight eight week window in the Metro Boston area from March1-May 1 every year. The show has also become known for “Masochistic March“, which focuses on a particular topic and really terrible films therein throughout the month every year; and their annual “eCinemaOne/Subject:CINEMA Rising Stars Honors” now announced every Labor Day (until 2016, it was announced on July 4 each year); the special honors twenty young rising stars -10 male and 10 female – each year, and has about an 85% accuracy rate in predicting everything from steady work to true superstardom for its recipients. Kirkham and Brown seem to have a real pulse on the industry with their Rising Stars, usually spotting them up to several YEARS in advance of major action on their careers. Rising Stars Honors recipients throughout the years have included a wide selection of young performers, including Emile Hirsch, Michael Angarano, Josh Hutcherson, John Boyega, Thomas Mann, Theo Taplitz, Owen Campbell, Osric Chau, Robert Pattinson, Oakes Fegley, Ezra Miller, Lucas Cruikshank, Tye Sheridan, and the late Anton Yelchin among the many young actors, and Mia Wasikowska, Ruth Negga, Bella Thorne, Felicity Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Kristen Stewart, Gal Gadot, Elle Fanning, Quvenzhane Wallis, Ellen Page, Zazze Beets, and Leticia Wright among the many young actresses.
